Dr. John J. Medina
Author, Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School

Dr. John J. Medina, a developmental molecular biologist, has a lifelong fascination with how the mind reacts to and organizes information. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller "Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School" -- a provocative book that takes on the way our schools and work environments are designed.

His latest book is a must-read for parents and early-childhood educators: "Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five." Medina is an affiliate Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research at Seattle Pacific University.

Kari Barlow

Kari Barlow is an Assistant Vice President for ASU Online at Arizona State University. Her focus is on implementation and modification of university and partner processes to ensure the development of rigorous, scalable online programs that promote student retention and graduation. Kari manages both the Knewton and Pearson relationship with ASU, as well as several other initiatives. She has been at ASU since 1986 and has advanced the institution's ability to achieve organizational goals through deployment of cross-functional teams in a large higher education setting, and by designing, developing, and implementing advanced technology solutions to drive organizational goals.

Dr. Jeff Borden

Dr. Jeff Borden has a Master’s in Rhetoric/Human Communication and his Doctorate in Education Leadership. Jeff has created, taught, and administered several upper and lower division Communication and Computer courses for several Universities and Community Colleges around the country since 1998. Additionally, he has assisted faculty, administrators, and trainers from diverse fields in conceptualizing and designing both on-ground and online courses as well as given direction to schools for total program success. Finally, Jeff speaks around the world giving keynote addresses, presenting his “Master Teacher” workshops, performing stand-up comedy, giving creativity seminars, and continues to publish within his field of study. Recently, Jeff has spoken to the U.S. Congress’ Education Committee, keynoted at a 12,000 audience member conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil, spoke in the 2nd Life NMC Symposium for the Future, and been asked to determine the “Academic Vision” for eCollege as well as looking for future trends in eLearning. Marni Baker Stein

Marni Baker Stein, PhD, Senior Associate Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, Columbia University School of Continuing Education, has worked as a program and curriculum designer for twenty years at educational institutions in the U.S. and abroad. She has designed and developed online and blended instructional experiences and curricula for a wide range of educational institutions and contexts including: Columbia University in the City of New York, The University of Pennsylvania, Temple University's Project Shine, and The School District of Philadelphia. Marni holds a PhD in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum from the University of Pennsylvania.

Teri Barnes

Teri L. Barnes, Associate Professor Mathematics at McLennan Community College, has taught at every level of education from kindergarten through to her current position at McLennan Community College. A Pearson Faculty Advocate, she also was part of the faculty advisory board whose input helped to shape the new design MyLabs platform, specifically regarding MyMathLab. Teri holds a BBA from Northwood University and an MS in Mathematics from Tarleton State University. She is currently using the MyLabs new design while piloting the Grimaldo text and eCourse for Pearson.

Michael Barr

Dr. Michael Barr is an organizational psychologist specializing in leadership and motivation. He joined TCSPP in 2001 as program faculty in the IO Program, and as director of the school’s Consulting Center. He has coached many high-potential leaders at all levels of responsibility, from entry level professionals to senior executives. He also has extensive experience in organizational assessment and selection test development. Currently, he is on a research team at Shriner’s Hospitals. Dr. Barr’s expertise covers a wide variety of workplace issues including job satisfaction, employee motivation and loyalty, leadership development, stress, trends, team building, and 360 feedback.

Patricia Bassett

Currently serving as the Director of Online Learning and an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Pat Bassett has been actively involved in online education since 1999. An innovator for technology integration at PBA since 2002, she has been instrumental in the development and expansion of the Center for Teaching Excellence. Pat is an administrator with faculty rank, a combination and blending of responsibilities that has helped to create an environment which provides support infrastructure needed to assist and encourage the efficient and effective use of Internet-based instructional technology in the curriculum.

Paula Bennett-Powell

I received a BA in Psychology from the University of Dayton and an MA and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. I have been a Licensed Clinical Child Psychologist for the past thirty years. I had a private practice for eighteen years. I supervised mental health staff at several mental health centers and at a foster care agency and I was the Clinical Director of a residential substance abuse treatment center for women for a combination of twelve years. I have been an Adjunct Instructor for five years; I have taught online for four of those years.

Luke Cable has been part of the Pearson eCollege Academic Training & Consulting team since fall of 2009. He specializes in Learning Outcome Manger (LOM) and Enterprise Reporting (ER) implementation processes. In this role, he provides consulting on effective outcome, rubric and assessment practices as well as reporting and improvement methods. His history of consulting, assessment and training are rooted in the business world where he served as a Continuing Education Director, Operations Manager, Project Architect and Mentor in a longstanding, architectural firm prior to joining Pearson eCollege. Aimee Callahan is the Director and Dean of Education for Independence University, an online college offering degrees from the A.S. level to graduate level. She has used Pearson LearningStudio in multiple roles as a student, instructor, and Educational Partner Pearson LearningStudio administrator. Aimee has held higher education positions in the U.S. and China ranging from being a faculty member to higher education administration leadership roles. Aimee earned her Ed.D. in Adult Learning and Postsecondary Education from the University of Wyoming.

Meredith Carpenter

Meredith Carpenter is the Entrepreneurship Instructor at Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC. Meredith earned her Masters in Business Administration and her Masters in Entrepreneurship from Western Carolina University and teaches a variety of classes in both the Business Administration and Entrepreneurship programs. She is the author of Innovation and Creativity, serves on the Pearson Online Learning Solutions Board, is a contributor to the Pearson Higher Education blog, and the developer of the app 'UCompleteMe', a game in creativity for all ages.

Mick Charney, Ph.D.

Charney holds a professional architecture degree and a doctorate in art history. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including repeat listings in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. At Kansas State University, he was a founding member and coordinator of the Faculty Exchange for Teaching Excellence. His scholarly research includes investigations into the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, most notably the authentication of one of his long-lost designs. Charney has authored book reviews about Wright in the online book review journal caa.reviews, a component of the College Art Association of America in which he serves on the Education Committee.

Kate Demarest

Kate Demarest is the Chair of the Department of Business and Information Technology at Carroll Community College. In both her role as a professor of accounting and as chair of the department, she is interested in finding ways to use technology to increase student engagement and academic success. She was an early adopter of web technology, in both online and classroom classes and has presented on this topic. After observing low rates of student success in accounting, Kate spearheaded a new model for homework and assessment in the Principles of Accounting classes which has yielded greater retention and more appropriate grade distributions.

Jonathan Epps has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and is working on a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Florida. Before becoming PBA’s EQUELLA administrator, he wrangled technology for an academic library, managing everything from the computer lab to the circulation system. In a past life, he wrote embedded control software for jet engines, including the engines that power the F35 Lighting II and some variants of the Blackhawk helicopter.

Erik Evans joined Bridgepoint in 2009 when he was hired as Editorial Director to build an editorial department and lead the product development effort for Constellation. Prior to joining Bridgepoint, Erik was Senior Acquisitions Editor for Psychology with SAGE Publications. He is a second generation college textbook publisher and has also worked for publishing houses Thomson/Cengage Learning and Bedford/Freeman/Worth. Erik has significant experience in many facets of college textbook publishing including editorial, sales, marketing and technology. Laurie Foster is a full professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Grand Rapids Community College. Teaching continues to be the pinnacle of her work. She has been recognized for her skills at the college, state and national levels and awarded the Excellence in Education, which is the highest honor bestowed upon staff at her institution. She was the recipient of the Biology Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Science Teachers Association. Laurie has continued to expand her curricular expertise into online and hybrid modalities. She has served as a co-facilitator of the certification process for faculty to offer such courses.

Pamela Fox

Pamela Fox has been with Bridgepoint since 2009 and is Editorial Product Manager responsible for the successful management and delivery of both Thuze and Constellation. Pam worked for the State of New York for 25 years introducing technology and the Web to the New York State Department of Health and New York State Division of the Budget. She was also responsible for New York State becoming the first state to report physician disciplinary actions on the Web. Ms. Fox earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Cornell University.

Before joining National University in 2001, he completed a career in the United States Navy.

Jeff S. Harmon currently serves as the Associate Director of Elearning at Ocean County College. He earned a BS in Business Administration from Rider University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Mr. Harmon currently serves as a board member/commissioner on two specialized accrediting agencies: The Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) and the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE). Ann has over nine years of experience creating instructional resources and teaching strategies to support online teaching and learning. Her responsibilities include project management of new implementations within consortium courses, serving as instructor for a series professional development training courses, and developing on-ground, online and video training opportunities for online instructors. Ann holds degrees in Computer Programming, Information Systems, and Negotiation and Conflict Management with an MS in Instructional Design and Human Performance.

Jon Johnson

Jon Johnson earned his M.S. in Educational Technology from the University of Northern Colorado (2007). As an expert in instructional design and development, and a certified WebCT trainer, Mr. Johnson has extensive skills in design, development, and implementation of learning management, instructional development, graphic design, video editing, and web development systems and software. He has experience with eCollege, WebCT Campus Edition, WebCT Vista, and Blackboard Academic Suite. At Park University, Mr. Johnson works with a team of course developers and instructional designers to develop online courses and serves as a lead for Section 508 implementation.

Rita Johnston

B.S., M.S., Palm Beach Atlantic University. Ms. Johnston was the recipient of Transformation Award from the MacArthur School of Organizational Leadership in May 2001. She came to PBA as an Adjunct Professor in 2001 in the MacArthur School of Leadership; since that time, she has taught a variety of courses in both the online and onsite programs, as well as developed courses for both programs. Prior to coming to PBA as a full time Assistant Professor in 2007, Ms. Johnston was employed as a full-time nationally certified paralegal.

Marni is the liaison between the Distance Learning Directors of those colleges and ICCOC staff. She is a graduate of Iowa State University.

Sarah Krajewski is a faculty member in the Biological Sciences Department at Grand Rapids Community College where she has been involved in redesigning, implementing and teaching Biology 101 and Biology for Educators. Her research investigates effective means to enhance learners’ epistemological views of science. This research has implications on learning theories, student retention and best practice pedagogy. She is an advocate for incorporating active learning strategies into traditional science lecture courses.

Dr. Gail Krovitz

Dr. Gail Krovitz is the Director of Academic Training and Consulting for Pearson eCollege, where she directs the vision and application of training for schools using the Pearson LearningStudio and various other Pearson products. She also consults on best practices for online or blended learning, teaching with technology, and setting up online programs for success. Gail has presented at a variety of eLearning conferences, including Sloan-C ALN and New Media Consortium. Prior to her work at Pearson, Gail taught a variety of traditional classes, and she continues to teach online courses for CU Denver and Colorado Community Colleges Online.

Jon Lenrow

Jon Lenrow is the Associate Dean, Academic Operations and Faculty Support at Peirce College. He is responsible for developing and monitoring quality control systems for academic programs and operational procedures. Jon chairs the Peirce Academic Quality Assurance committee and is also an adjunct instructor. In 2004, Peirce honored Jon by presenting him with the Hamilton Award for Academic Excellence and Integrity. Jon is a member of the Pearson eCollege Product Advisory Board and has received the Pearson Excellence in Academic Operations Award. He holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany and a master’s degree from Wake Forest.

Jeffrey Littlejohn

Jeffrey L. Littlejohn is an Associate Professor of History at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. His research interests include civil rights, civil liberties, and the American Constitution. Dr. Littlejohn has been teaching online since 1999, and his digital projects on “The Brown Decision in Norfolk, Virginia” and “Democracy and Diversity in Walker County, Texas” have received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and Humanities Texas.

Christine Lustik

Christine Lustik is an Implementation Specialist for Smarthinking. Prior to Smarthinking she spent six years as the Director of Distance Education at Western Wyoming Community College with previous higher education faculty and instructional design experience in both public and private sector institutions. Christine completed both her Master in Education, 2003, with a focus on Teaching and Learning Online and her Ph.D. in Education, 2008, with a combined focus on Leadership in Higher Education and Instructional Design at Capella University. She is a current member of the WCET Steering Committee.

Margie Martyn

As the Vice President of Instructional Systems, Dr. Martyn oversees the tools and technologies used to increase student learning engagement in all course delivery modes. As Assistant Dean of Academic Administration at the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University, Dr. Martyn developed processes to better serve students, faculty and staff. She oversaw academic assessment, international programs, and online learning. Her experience designing and teaching online courses covers a variety of approaches including lecture capture, interactive simulcast, modular online-only and hybrid models. She has published articles on the impact of technology on student learning outcomes.

Jeff Maynard

Jeff Maynard is CEO of Biometric Signature ID and an expert in the field of dynamic biometrics receiving two patents for inventions using biometric technologies for identity verification, new product of the year award from Frost and Sullivan and an emerging technology award from the State of Texas. Maynard completed his undergraduate degree from York University, Toronto and executive training from Harvard/MIT, and the Kellogg School of Business. He is a leader with experience in Fortune 500 and startup technology companies. He’s been a speaker at UT-Dallas Business School, COIT Association for AOUC, WCET, NISOD, SIDLIT, Sloan and other events.

Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills works for Barton Community College as the Distance Learning Effectiveness Manager. He facilitates the development of faculty across modalities and fosters course quality improvement through improved learner environments that utilize advanced techniques and technologies to enhance student engagement and learning. His teaching experience includes: Principles of Economics, Macroeconomics, and Agricultural Economics; Elements of Statistics; and Personal and Community Health. Dr. Newhouse is Associate Professor and Lead Faculty in the IO Psychology program at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. In the I/O ExCEL program, she teaches courses in Performance Management, Employee Selection, Survey Development, Organizational Consulting, and the Applied Research Project series. Dr. Newhouse’s most recent applied role was as a Consulting Psychologist and Research Analyst with IPAT, Inc. Her responsibilities included consulting project management, developing and facilitating public certification and customized training programs, and conducting applied psychological research for consulting engagements.
